No, we haven’t attained the status of The Masters, The British Open, or the Players Championship Tournament.
But to our cherished seniors from The Los Angeles Senior Nutrition Program, and our beautiful Children from
the Rett Clinic , Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles(CHLA) our tournament is just as important. Actually it is!!!
Last year I was fortunate enough to come in contact with a group of Mothers who have Children with Rett
Syndrome. I say fortunate because it opened my eyes to a whole new world of need, where I know we can
make a difference. I was vaguely familiar with Rett Syndrome because one of my family members is a victim.
However I did not realize how little attention and funding is directed to this medical area. Last year with your
help we were able to make a small donation to these precious angels. I wish all of you could have experienced
the outpouring of love and thanks that I got from the parents and providers who spend countless hours
caring for these special children.
For our Silver Anniversary I can think of no greater pleasure than the opportunity to give maximum support
to the Rett Clinic at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles (CHLA). They have an ongoing financial burden to provide
care and conduct research to find a cure for this debilitating disease. Whatever we can do will make that
burden a little lighter.
The Children’s Hospital Los Angeles Rett Clinic is located at the USC Center for Excellence In Development
Disabilities. The Rett Clinic is one of only two such clinics in California and one of only a few centers in the United
States that specializes in the diagnosis and comprehensive care of children and youth with Rett Syndrome.
Rett Syndrome is an Autism Spectrum neuro-developmental disorder caused by a mutation on the X
chromosome and seen primarily in females. Rett Syndrome strikes all racial and ethnic groups, and occurs
worldwide in 1 of every 10,000 to 23,000 female births. The child develops normally for the first 6-18 months
followed by a regression period. Those diagnosed with Rett Syndrome may be unable to walk, talk or use
their hands purposefully. Many suffer from other complications including seizures, scoliosis and breathing
abnormalities. Currently there is no cure but these individuals benefit greatly from medical, therapeutic and
educational interventions and interaction with family and community.
